Kindergarten Highlights March 2017

Happy Spring! We have been looking for signs of spring all around us.

Thank you for sending your child in crazy socks to support World Down Syndrome Day!

Literacy:
During March students enjoyed a variety of Dr. Seuss stories, books about spring, and explored the idea of bears in spring. We have been listening for rhyming words and practising making our own rhymes. Pals update: all 26 sounds have been taught and now the students are beginning blends. Sight words include a, the, was, on, is, I, and, into, my, are, for, with, they, play, have, has, her and wants.

Math:
We are learning to use positional language. Words like behind, under, over, above... help us locate toys and tell our friends where to look! We also have been creating number sentences adding two sets of objects together.

Lent:
We are continuing to do good deeds at home and at school. A popcorn party will follow celebrating all of our acts of kindness. We have been learning about Jesus' time on earth teaching about God's love for all and hearing about the many miracles Jesus performed while on earth.

Inventor's Workshop:
Thank you to all of the families that sent in supplies for our workshop! Students have begun to use their imagination to create structures and inventions to share with their classmates.

February Highlights 2017

Highlights from February 2017

We have had a very busy month in Kindergarten! Our month began with the ground hog suggesting that there would be six more weeks of winter, our 100th day of classes for the 2016-2017 school year and then Valentine's Day! Please enjoy some of the photos from the month......

Math- Measurement

We explored a variety of measurement activities! Kindergartens used Canadian coins to shop in the ice castle ice cream shop and learned some of the names and values of coins through play, books and songs. Kindergartens used math language while comparing lengths, mass, size during block play and balance and scale activities.

Literacy- "What does it mean to be a family?" Chapter Book
We read and discussed sharing in a family, times of conflict, what our role is living in a family, and how a family goes around and around through the generations. Kindergartens enjoyed talking and learning about all different types of families while reading stories and learning a special song. We concluded that families come in all different sizes and different kinds, families are people who live together, people who care for us and love us and we know we belong to our family.
Thanks to all families who took the time to complete your family page for our class book about families.

We even had a visit from Griff and some students from St. College for story time.

Lent- Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday

We enjoyed a delicious pancake breakfast cooked and served by our volunteers on the parent council. Thank you!
On Ash Wednesday we attended Mass with our reading buddies and received ashes on our foreheads.
Our Kindergarten Lenten program will include "Good Deed" tickets to be filled out at home and sent in to class to be shared with the class. We also are placing popcorn kernels in a jar on our prayer table for each good deed we do at school. At the end of lent we will have a popcorn party to celebrate our many good deeds.

Healthy Eating- We are learning all about the Canada Food Guide and the food groups. Students are sorting food pictures and learning about which foods are for "all the time" and the ones that are a "sometimes" choice.
