January 2017 Happy New Year from Kindergarten!
Give a cheer! Happy new year!
When the snow finally arrived, we brought it into the school so students could explore with thermometers and also gain experience with the various properties of snow. Students problem solved cold hands and wore gloves. Great job!
Math- students explored the many attributes of two-dimensional shapes and enjoyed identifying them in their environments. They also spent time creating them, drawing and the ever popular patterning with shapes! Many opportunities for counting and representing numbers continues with snowball and snowflake counting, penguin and egg matching sets to numerals, snowman count...
Language- students continue to explore with a variety of writing materials including markers, crayons, pencils, dry erase markers, play dough...practising letters, their names and pals words. We learned new sight word poems including a, the and I. We enjoyed many stories including an animal new year party, a stuck zipper, friends, birthdays, shapes, winter and snowmen.
Students are using the word walls and books to support their writing.
Independence- congratulations to many kindergarten students who are able to dress in outdoor clothing on their own! We as a team are very proud of their determination!
Homework Ideas- have your child identify shapes in your home environment. Children can use qtips, toothpicks, cutlery to form shapes. Drawing and labeling, colouring a variety of shapes can help build fine motor skills and confidence with drawing abilities. Continue reading books together and discussing the characters, setting, and problem in the story. Children are making predictions about books by looking at the pictures before they begin. They can also tell us what the story reminds them of in their own life, the world or another book they have experienced. Enjoy!
February brings excitement about the ice castle, Groundhog Day, 100s day, Valentine's Day...and loads more learning! Stay tuned!
