Highlights Kindergarten April 2016

We have had so much fun enjoying the arrival of spring. We took a spring walk around our yard looking for signs of spring, taking pictures to build our spring word wall. We have loved our outdoor recesses, bike riding, climbing, bubble blowing and playing in the sand box.

Our big idea for April was "How do we care for our world?" In honour of Earth Day.

Literacy:
We learned about the importance of protecting endangered animals and our responsibility to all animals as we read "Panda Kindergarten". We explored the results of one person doing one small thing to show care for the environment and how it can inspire others while studying "Someone Cared For A Flower". We noticed the importance of messages on posters and how posters can be a great tool to spread news. We created posters to remind fellow students and staff to care for our world through recycling programs, planting trees and flowers, walking instead of driving, picking up litter, not wasting water and electricity, etc.
Mathematics:
Kindergarten students have been exploring a variety of adding activities with the help of books, manipulatives and songs. We have had some challenging questions for students to work on with friends during play. There have been a wide variety of solutions and some very creative ways to solve these math problems! Great work! Ordinal numbers and positional language have also been introduced this month.
We will be exploring patterns in our 100 chart and skip counting in May.

Religion:
We have been sharing bible stories about creation and Noah's ark to emphasize our responsibility to love our earth as it is a beautiful gift from God.

Science:
We saw a rainbow in one of our stories and students were interested in how rainbows were made. Through exploration with prisms, reading books and drawing and painting, water and food colouring experiments we enjoyed recreating many rainbows. We learned the order of the colours through song, and use of ordinal numbers. We have also planted many seeds. We are experimenting with growing seeds with and without soil. We know all living things need water, air and sun to grow well.

Thanks to all of the families who sold school lottery tickets, donated items for the prize baskets, and joined us for the annual pasta dinner. Your support is greatly appreciated!
